I built my first spiral staircase for a house I was building for myself. I was intrigued by the interplay of form and function overlaid by the constraints of space and building code requirements.

Then in 1988 I accepted a few commissions to build spiral staircases out of wood as a way to supplement my farm income.

Next, Jon Randall of Accidental Anomalies Inc (fame) who has a background in steel fabrication, joined me and helped build a unique wood, steel spiral prototype. By the third unit we were in business. Maine Spiral Staircase builds robust and interesting staircases because the two of us approach things from very different directions.
